General information about the country and what it is known for
St. Patrick, the primary patron saint of Ireland is recorded as being born in Roman Britain, (perhaps in what is now Wales) and not arriving in Ireland until he was about 16. One legend about St. Patrick is that he banished all snakes from Ireland by chasing them into the sea. The legend is refuted by naturalists, amongst others who state that fossil records show no evidence that snakes have ever inhabited Ireland. It is recorded in places that St. Patrick was born ‘Maewyn Succat’ and became known as Patrick (Patricius or Padrig) later in his life. Earlier depictions of St. Patrick show him clothed in blue garments and not green that he is now widely associated with.
Ireland or the ‘Republic of Ireland’ takes up about 80% of the island of Ireland, the other 20% or so of the island is ‘Northern Ireland’. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
The national symbol of Ireland is the musical instrument the harp, not the shamrock. The shamrock, which is possibly more associated with Ireland is perhaps the unofficial symbol of Ireland.
Bram Stoker the author who created Dracula was born in Dublin in the mid-1800s.
