Moving to Ipswich

Upon moving to Ipswich, many anticipate a quaint provincial town, but the reality is quite different. With numerous new developments, a waterfront entertainment complex, and a Suffolk University campus, Ipswich offers a dynamic and vibrant setting. Despite its modern façade, Ipswich is one of the oldest towns in the country, boasting a rich historical tapestry that comes alive through regular historical re-enactments. For history enthusiasts, the town provides an abundance of engaging activities. If your interests lean more towards arts and culture, Ipswich is equally well-suited.

While the skyline is punctuated by 1960s tower blocks, deemed by some as eyesores, Ipswich features an impressive array of housing. From elegant Victorian villas to charming half-timbered Medieval cottages, the town’s architectural diversity is notable. Nestled in Suffolk, Ipswich benefits from its proximity to untouched countryside and a picturesque coast, making properties in these locations highly sought after.

Ipswich’s popular neighbourhoods include Rushmere Road, known for its inviting village atmosphere, and Christchurch Park, which exudes a more urban vibe. Leafy avenues filled with spacious post-war homes characterize Belstead Road and Bucklesham Road, adding to the diverse residential offerings in Ipswich.

School In Ipswich

Ipswich is home to several primary schools that enjoy commendation from both parents and students. Tattingstone CofE, Hindlesham and Chattisham CofE, St Mary’s Catholic, and St Mark’s Catholic stand out as top-ranking schools in Ipswich.

When it comes to secondary education, Kesgrave High School, Copleston High School, and Northgate High School are highly sought after. However, parents should be mindful that these schools are frequently oversubscribed.

Transport Links in Ipswich

Traveling to and from Ipswich is conveniently facilitated by its strategic location at the intersections of the A12 (connecting London to Great Yarmouth) and A14 (linking Felixstowe to Birmingham). However, navigating the town centre’s driving can be challenging due to a complex one-way system, often experiencing heavy traffic congestion. Given the expensive parking fees, many opt for the three Park and Ride sites located on the outskirts of the town. These sites charge £2.80 for the day and provide complimentary bus travel to and from the city centre.

Ipswich railway station, situated one mile from the town centre, offers accessible transportation options. For those heading to the capital, trains depart every half hour to London Liverpool Street (1 hour 10 minutes). The journey to Norwich takes 30 to 40 minutes, contingent on the service, and there’s an hourly train to Cambridge (1 hour 20 minutes). Additionally, services connect Ipswich to Peterborough, Lowestoft, and Felixstowe.

A secondary station, Derby Road, operates hourly services between Ipswich and Felixstowe. However, it’s worth noting that this unmanned station is often avoided at night due to its quiet atmosphere and poor lighting.

The Old Cattle Market bus station on Falcon Street serves as a hub for regional and long-distance bus services to and from Ipswich. Regular buses connect to Sudbury, Colchester, Stowmarket, Woodbridge, Framlington, and Felixstowe. Furthermore, three National Express services run to London daily, along with one to Liverpool and two hourly services to London Stansted Airport. While there are also buses serving rural areas, their frequency is not as high as that of the regional services.
